Forsyth Forever: Growing Up and Living in Forsyth County, GA
I was born and raised right here in Forsyth County, Georgia back when Cumming was just a sleepy little town where everyone seemed to know everyone else, and a trip down Highway 9 was more about rolling hills and cow pastures than shopping centers and coffee shops. My name’s Emma Sams, and at 54 years old, I still wake up grateful every day that this place I’ve always called home has grown without losing its heart.
Childhood Memories in Forsyth County
When I think back to my childhood, I can almost smell the red clay and sweet honeysuckle that lined the dirt roads behind our house. Summers were spent barefoot, chasing lightning bugs after supper, and riding my bike to the little general store that used to sit where a busy shopping center now stands.
Forsyth County in those days was smaller, quieter, and simpler. We measured time by seasons, not schedules — the first day of school at Cumming Elementary, the church potluck in the fall, and the Christmas parade down Main Street where every float had more hand-painted signs than polished banners. It was a small-town rhythm that grounded us, where neighbors were more like extended family and Sundays were reserved for church, rest, and porch sitting.
Lake Lanier was our playground before it became the weekend destination it is today. My parents would pack a cooler full of sandwiches, and we’d spend the day swimming, fishing, and laughing until the sun sank orange and pink over the water. Those moments shaped me — they taught me that community isn’t just about a place, but about belonging.
Living in Forsyth County, GA Today
When I look around today, it’s hard to believe how much Forsyth County has changed — yet it still feels like home in all the ways that matter. What used to be farmland and two-lane roads has transformed into thriving neighborhoods, vibrant parks, and some of the best schools in Georgia.
Living in Forsyth County, GA today means having the best of both worlds: a forward-thinking community with modern conveniences, balanced by Southern hospitality and a deep respect for tradition. I’ve seen new families arrive from across the country — drawn to our top-rated schools, the safety of our neighborhoods, and the beauty of North Georgia’s rolling foothills. Every time I meet someone new, I feel proud that they’ve chosen what I’ve always known: Forsyth County is special.
The Cumming GA Lifestyle: Then and Now
Cumming has grown up, too. When I was young, the fairgrounds were the biggest event in town each year, and everyone looked forward to the Cumming Country Fair and Festival — that tradition remains, but now it’s just one piece of the Cumming GA lifestyle. These days, life here might mean dining at locally owned restaurants, spending Saturdays at Vickery Village or Halcyon, or enjoying a concert at the Cumming City Center.
There’s something magical about walking through Sawnee Mountain Preserve early in the morning — the mist rising through the trees, the silence so deep you can almost hear the mountain breathing. It’s in those quiet moments that I realize how lucky I am. Our county managed to grow without losing its soul. Families still gather for Friday night football, students still wave from school buses, and neighbors still bring casseroles when someone’s in need.
Forsyth County’s growth hasn’t erased its charm; it’s simply evolved. What once was a rural hometown has become one of Georgia’s most desirable places to live yet it still feels like the same county where I grew up.
Community Roots, New Opportunities
Over the years, I’ve watched countless changes, new faces, new schools, new roads, and yet I still see the same familiar smiles at the farmers’ market or at church on Sunday morning. There’s a quiet comfort in knowing that while progress keeps moving forward, our values have stayed rooted in connection, faith, and family.
It’s easy to be nostalgic about the “old Forsyth,” but today’s Forsyth has more opportunity, creativity, and diversity than ever before. My children are grown now, but they’ve chosen to raise their families here too and that’s the highest compliment a hometown can earn. They love that they can enjoy everything from outdoor concerts to lake days and still find the same sense of belonging I felt growing up.
From the walking trails of Fowler Park to family picnics at Mary Alice Beach Park and community gatherings at Cumming City Center, we’ve created spaces where every generation can enjoy life together. That, to me, is what makes this county enduringly special. We’re a community that remembers its past while building an even brighter future.
Why I Still Love Living in Forsyth County, GA
As someone who has lived here for more than five decades, I can honestly say that living in Forsyth County, GA feels better than ever. We’ve come a long way from gravel roads and feed stores, yet the same easygoing spirit still runs through it all. It’s in the friendly wave from a neighbor, the joy of kids playing along the Big Creek Greenway, and the pride that comes with knowing our county keeps growing stronger without losing what makes it home.
Each season brings its own charm: the bloom of spring across North Georgia, summer sun on Lake Lanier, crisp fall festivals, and peaceful winter nights filled with local events. There’s always something to do now: concerts, restaurants, farmers markets, and local shops and yet every experience still feels infused with small-town warmth.
I sometimes joke that Forsyth County raised me twice, once as a child exploring its open fields, and again as an adult rediscovering all it has to offer. I wouldn’t trade that for the world.
